A LOAD OF OLD BOLLARDS
The rapid introduction of Low Traffic Networks in Oxford in 2021 caused uproar in communities with supporters and opponents engaged in a vociferous battle to get their point across. The chasm between the well-intentioned theory behind the traffic reduction measures and the divisiveness of its implementation has resulted in many angry voices in this arena, few of which listen to the concerns of the other.

A Load of Old Bollards reflects on the charged media headlines, toxic online forums and distorted rhetoric that represent fundamental divides in local communities, and in particular in Cowley and East Oxford. The work grapples with this complex situation and its many facets in an effort to increase understanding and awareness of the issues involved, to acknowledge the legitimacy of fears, the rhetoric spewed by angry voices, as well as the creativity of the vexed. It aims to encourage people to stop, talk to their neighbours and just listen in order to find a more considered way forward for both sides.

Thsi work was exhibtied at the North Wall Gallery Oxford as part of Dividing Lines, Connecting Spaces, 1-19 April, 2025.
